Trichy Shankaran: An unforgettable concert in 1962

Shri Trichy Shankaran is being awarded the Sangita Kalanidhi award for this year ( It is the title awarded yearly to an expert Carnatic musician by Madrads Music Academy. This honour is considered one of the highest awards in Carnatic music). Latest issue of Sruti magazine has a brilliant cover story on the artiste written by Shri V. Ramnarayan. Let me quote a part of it where an unforgettable concert of 1962 has been fondly recollected: " By May 1962, Palani ( Palani Subramanya Pillai, the legendary Mridangam artiste and Trichy Shankaran's Guru) was fighting for his life after suffering a heart attack. Visiting him at Isabel Hospital, Luz, eminent vocalist Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer asked Palani's wife to allow Shankaran to stand in for Palani in a Semmangudi concert a few days later at Malleswaram, Bangalore. Palani was already in a coma. At the concert Semmangudi announced: " This lad will play in his guru's place in such a way that we won't miss his guru." Palani died a few days later. It was therefore an unforgettable concert for Shankaran in more ways than one."
