Musiri: Fall out of a success
It has been widely written about the impact of the gramophone records over Indian classical renderings as the performer had to cut short the rendering according to track length of the disc. But Musiri Subramania Iyer (1899-1975) had to face the issue the other way. His gramophone record of 'NagumOmu ganalEni' in Raga Abheri became a great hit and since then whenever he had to perform the composition in a concert, the fans expected a rendering exactly as he sang for the disc. Imagine the plight of Musiri to whom it was quiet natural to sing more than half an hour for exposition of this Abheri item.
