Malkauns, its mindscapes and an unforgettable Saturday

Through out the Saturday,I was listening to just one raga: Malkauns rendered by legends like Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Ustad Amir Khan, Surashri Kesarbai Kerkar, Pt. Omkarnath Thakur, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Pt. D.V.Paluskar, Pt. Krishnarao Shankar Pandit, Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Vidushi Kishori Amonkar.

It had been an unforgettable experience to see the different skies of this ancient raga opened before my mindscapes. This is the reason why various Ragamala artistes of the 16th and 17th century painted Raga Malkauns in totally different ways. Here I am offering three renderings of Malkauns with three Ragamala depictions of the raga from the 16th century.

  1. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan ( His Malkauns is the first 'recorded' Malkauns in Indian music): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw7xoTMvmdU
  2. Surashri Kesarbai Kerkar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oKh-lsOFD4
  3. Pt. Omkarnath Thakur: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXUgIsq-4KM
