Jugalbandi from the Wodeyar Era

Yesterday a musician friend called me from Kannur , Kerala and played back Ustad Abdul Karim Khan’s Carnatic style rendering ‘Rama Nee Samaanamevaru’, raga Kharaharapriya composition by Tyagaraja. Thanks to Dr. E.N.Sajith for remembering me while listening to Ustad’s Carnatic rendering. It is an amazing experience even imagining the great Ustad learning Carnatic music lessons from Bidaram Krishnappa, one of the important Carnatic exponents in the royal court of Krishnaraja Wodeyar of Mysore (1902-1940)

Let us start the day with two rare recordings from the past :

  1. A ragamalika by Bidaram Krishnappa : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke0IarwXB1U&feature=related
  2. Rama Nee Samaanamevaru- Kharaharapriya- Ustad Abdul Karim Khan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp1-HgUVGNM

  2. Dear Shri Gopalakrishnan,

Thanks for this post. This is very valuable information for me as I am researching the life, times and music of Bidaram Krishnappa. The Youtube video seems to be unavailable. Would it be possible to send me the Ragamalika audio/video please? Any other recordings of Bidaram also would be most helpful.
    Thanks a lot!

    Best Regards,
    Sameer Kunde
